Beekeepers and Friends
The LeFleur Museum District which includes the MS Sports Hall of Fame, MS Children’s Museum, MS Ag and Forestry Museum and MS Museum of Natural Science will host the Mississippi Science Festival on September 22, 2017 (Field Trip Friday) and September 23 (Festival Saturday).
The goals are to create a first-class, hands-on experience for children and families to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); introduce participants to real world scientists from industries in Mississippi; inspire wonder and curiosity in participants of all ages; promote STEM subjects and increase science literacy and lastly develop partnerships among museums, universities, businesses and other cultural leaders. Activities will occur at all the museums during the two-day science festival.
Beekeepers were asked to volunteer their time at an exhibit table by Emily Summerlin from the Ag & Forestry Museum 1150 Lakeland Drive, Jackson, MS 39216.
At the CMBA Exhibit Table in the Heritage Center Exhibit Center, beekeepers should provide a hands on activity to encourage awareness of STEM education and workplace development, for example an observation hive and poster size photographs of bees will be provided by Walter McKay to find the queen and provide teaching aids, other items to showcase how and where bees work should be provided by the volunteer beekeeper. Set up will be similar to the State Fair.
Over the course of the two-day festival 3,000 visitors are expected. This event will require many volunteers at various times spanning 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Friday will be attended by school children on a field trip to the Festival.
Saturday will be busy with extended hours, as the festival is open to the public on that day. Additional beekeepers may be required to man the table and answer questions about beekeeping on Saturday. Mark your calendar to volunteer for this important event.
